The small farmers from our project in Myanmar not only harvest tea for us - ginger also thrives here.

Ginger in traditional medicine

The dried ginger root with the Latin name Zingiber officinale is believed to originate from Asia and is now mainly cultivated in China and India. Vietnam also cultivates a lot of ginger, and the Vietnamese ginger root stands out from other ginger varieties due to its intense citrus flavour.

In China, ginger has been used as a medicinal plant for centuries, for example in the form of ginger tea. In Europe, its medicinal use has been known since the 9th century. Hildegard von Bingen, for example, used ginger for gastrointestinal complaints. In Chinese medicine, ginger enjoys a special status due to its antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects, and its positive properties are also recognised in Europe.

In 2018, the miracle tuber was even named medicinal plant of the year. Find out more about ginger and its uses in the Tea Taster blog
