The sacred herb of the Indians, also known as royal basil, plays an important role in Hindu religious teachings and in Ayurvedic natural medicine. In Ayurveda in particular, tulsi is often enjoyed as a tea - whether in its pure form or flavoured with herbs and spices.
Immerse yourself in the world of herbs with Tulsi Spirit, a harmonious tea blend made from selected, organically grown ingredients from Austria. The main ingredient of this special tea is tulsi, a type of basil that has been valued in Ayurvedic teachings for centuries. The finely balanced composition of tulsi, anise hyssop, apple mint, dragon's head balm, mallow, yarrow and lemon verbena gives this tea an herbaceous, mild flavour with a pleasantly refreshing yet gentle note. Every cup of Tulsi Spirit invites you to relax and feel good - a moment of pleasure for body and soul.
What is Tulsi?
Tulsi, also known as royal, Indian or ‘holy basil’ (Ocimum sanctum or Ocimum tenuiflorum), is one of the most important plants in Ayurveda and has been valued for thousands of years for its many positive properties. In India, tulsi is revered as a sacred plant and is regarded as the incarnation of the goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Vishnu. Many households have their own tulsi bush, which is used for spiritual rituals. In temples, tulsi leaves are said to have a special purifying and protective power.
Use in Ayurveda teachings
In Ayurvedic medicine, tulsi is regarded as an adaptogen that supports the body in coping with stress and promotes inner balance. It is traditionally used for various ailments of the respiratory tract, digestive tract or to strengthen the immune system.
Meaning of tulsi in Hinduism
For many Hindus, tulsi plays an important role as a ‘sacred herb’, especially in religious ceremonies. Many Indian households grow the plant in their doorways or courtyards, often surrounded by colourfully painted stones. Prayers are said in front of these small altars for the daily worship of the Indian deities Krishna (or Vishnu) and Lakshmi. Tulsi leaves are also used as offerings during religious services in honour of Vishnu.
In South Asia and Southeast Asia, tulsi is also a common ingredient in the kitchen, for example as tea or as a component of spice mixtures such as horapa.
