In the south of India, the enchanting Nilgiri Mountains are home to the Korakundah Tea Garden. Located on the border between the Tamil Nadu and Kerala states, Korakundah extends over nearly 1000 hectares, of which only about a third is planted with tea - leaving the rest for forest and grassland. At an average altitude of 2200 meters, this is where the finest natural organic tea grows. Fruity, mild and harmonious with a copper red cup.

Mild black tea from the grasslands of southern India

The pristine landscape in the Nilgiris is characterised by ‘sholas’ (grasslands), which are interspersed with species-rich flora and fauna, forests, rivers and lakes. Tigers also feel at home here. The Korakundah tea garden has set up its own ‘Grasslands and Shola Conservation’ organisation, which preserves and cares for this natural beauty.

A tea garden like a whole village

The Korakundah tea garden is actually a whole village. Several hundred people live and work here. Some of them don't even work in tea, but in the dairy, the kindergarten or the school. Korakundah also has a hospital, which was built with Fairtrade funds and is not only accessible to the employees of the tea garden, but also to the inhabitants of the neighbouring villages. Specialists from Coimbatore, who are trained in other disciplines, visit twice a week alongside the internists who are always present.

Tea cultivation in the Nilgiris

Tea cultivation in the Nilgiris began around 1878, when the tea bushes were imported from China, but over time they were replaced by home-grown varieties, for example from Assam. Korakundah still has some parts of the garden that rely on the original Chinese bushes. These have a different taste when they are processed, which is why they are kept, for example to make specialities. The leaves are also processed into certified organic black and green tea. The different types and forms of processing flow into a wide range of tea creations and offer very different characters for very different tea flavours.
